The Upstate Catholic Business Network will host our regular Breakfast and Speaker on Wednesday 19 October.
Our October breakfast speaker is Dr. John Carrano. Dr. Carrano founded Paratus Diagnostics in 2012 after recognizing a need for a diagnostic device that was truly point-of-care. His idea was to develop a simple chairside test that would provide accurate results in minutes instead of days. John retired from Paratus as their CEO in 2020 after leading the company in the development and clinical trial of their flagship PreparedNow® diagnostic test. Previously, Dr. Carrano served as vice president, research & development at Luminex Corporation (NASDAQ: LMNX) where he led the development of several successful commercial products.
Prior to Luminex, John was a program manager for the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA). At DARPA he developed several major Defense Department bio-sensing programs totaling more than $200,000,000. In addition, he conceived, initiated and led the Chemical and Biological Sensors Standard Study while at DARPA. The study gained wide acceptance within the DoD and DHS communities and has been used as the basis of several major government programs to establish meaningful and fair standards for all contractors to follow.
Earlier in his career, he served on the faculty of the United States Military Academy at West Point where he taught electrical engineering and computer science, and was a research scientist in the Photonics Research Center.
Dr. Carrano is a veteran of the United States Army with over 24 years of decorated service including a variety of command and staff positions both in the US and abroad. He graduated in the top 10 percent of his class from the United States Military Academy at West Point and earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Carrano was awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in part for his contributions to the nation in combating bioterrorism.
Dr. Carrano has 13 issued patents and over 60 publications. He is a Fellow of the Society of Professional Engineers (SPIE), and he is a member of the Society of Catholic Scientists. In 2012 he was appointed to the Department of Homeland Security’s Science Advisory Board by Secretary Janet Napolitano.
He and his wife, Nancy, reside in Greenville, South Carolina and are the parents of four adult children.
